NINE-STORY ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY WITH MASONRY PERIMETER HURRICANE-PROTECTION WALLS

West Palm Beach, Florida

Located in West Palm Beach, Fla.’s downtown area, 401 Datura is a nine-story assisted living facility that fills a need for high-end elder care and assisted living in the community. As residents enter their golden years, they have an option to stay in their neighborhood and remain within walking distance of all that the city has to offer.

The building’s façade integrates concrete and concrete masonry units (CMUs) to create a timeless aesthetic that fits seamlessly with the city’s architecture, which is inspired by both Mediterranean Revival and Mission Revival designs. Ceco provided the full, turnkey concrete frame along with a masonry perimeter of hurricane-protection walls. The scope of work included pouring 11,804 cubic yards of concrete and installing 258,631 square feet of elevated decks, 795 tons of rebar, 233,000 pounds of post-tensioning tendons and 111,582 CMUs.

The building’s flat-plate concrete structural system was chosen for its cost-effectiveness. Formwork systems used include the Ceco-owned HV forming system and CEFCO table system.

Navigating a tight site
Ceco faced complex logistical challenges due to the project’s downtown location and zero lot line, which left little to no room between the building and the property line. A lack of available space for materials storage, pumping equipment and cranes required high-level traffic control and just-in-time deliveries.

Our in-house engineers and field team also worked together to keep the project on track and crews safe. Their careful collaboration led to Ceco achieving high shoring in the garage and cantilever slab lids over elevator and stair shafts at the upper roof.

The Ceco team topped out the concrete frame one week ahead of schedule.
