CECO TOPS OFF AT THE WAVE HOTEL IN ORLANDO

Aug 14th 2020

Ceco Concrete has completed work at The Wave Hotel, a 17-story luxury hotel that boasts more than 5,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The Wave will be developer Tavistock Development Co.’s premier hotel at Lake Nona Town Center in Orlando, Fla.

Located at the heart of the Lake Nona community, the Lake Nona Town Center offers 4 million square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment, welcoming thousands of visitors each week. Phase I of the development included construction of an office building with ground-level restaurants, a dual-branded hotel and a parking garage defined by iconic art installations. The Phase II expansion creates 100 acres of an open-air social setting featuring a mix of shops and eateries. At the focal point of the expansion is The Wave Hotel, the tallest and most modern building for miles around.

The Ceco Tampa team provided turnkey concrete frame services, including tower crane services, excavation and foundations.

The project included constructing 17 levels of 8-inch post-tensioned (PT) flat slabs over a 56,000-square-foot amenity level with a 10- to 16-inch-thick PT slab. The amenity level is the first elevated slab, which was formed in seven pours and has large PT beams running through it. This level was constructed using Ceco’s CEFCO scaffolding with preconstructed deck panels. The other levels are about 12,600 square feet and were formed in two pours using Ceco’s truss table system, which enabled a six-day cycle. Ceco also used the CEFCO column-mounted forming system to construct a unique bridge feature that connects the east and west wings of the building. Again, this system helped the Ceco team maintain a six-day turnaround.

Wave HotelWith large construction projects, there are always a few wrinkles along the way. For this project, the biggest challenge was the amount of design changes made throughout the project duration. Ceco worked closely with general contractor Balfour Beatty to ensure the design changes did not slow progress. The building topped out July 2020 and was completed under budget and on time.
