Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery

10-story research facility

900 E. 57th St.
Chicago, Illinois

The Gwen and Jules Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery houses the Institute for Molecular Pediatric Sciences, which is exclusively dedicated to improving children’s health. The new building is also home to the Center for Metastasis Research and is one of only six centers in the country to focus on the study of metastasis.

The new facility houses laboratories, office space for principal investigators, postdoctoral students and graduate students as well as interaction spaces for the researchers to collaborate with other departments and staff from the varying studies within the building. The new building provides open, efficient, and flexible laboratory and office spaces to encourage cross-fertilization between researchers and their focuses.

The building features few walls, most of which can be changed easily, depending on research needs. The building also includes conference and lecture halls and several multistory public and common spaces, all designed to enhance the exchange of ideas among the 80 scientific investigators and 800 personnel. The vast, open, and flexible lab spaces encourage collaboration among scientists and cross-fertilization between research teams.
